i like how you compared the sentiments of our protagonists with possible thoughts of a current day soldier. soldiers have faced things that many people do not, so it is hard to understand what they have delt with. also i like how you discussed that war, though sometimes necessary as anselmo says, goes against everything we are brought up to believe.

I think it is very interesting how you compare Pilar to Hemngway because the first iniclination of most readers of the novel would be to compare Robert to Heminigway. Also interesting is the fact that Pilar means column in Spanish, because columns symbolize power and strength. Obviously, Pilar is the most dominant presence in the guerilla camp, so the name is fitting.

Malcolm,
I find it weird that I followed the same topic as you without first reading your essay. We have very similar points. I like how you add in the reference to Henry from The Red Badge of Courage. Sorry I couldn't underline the title. We agree that Anselmo's words deny his shot at the Code Hero. I guess great minds think alike.

Nick I agree with your point that Anselmo is not a hero because of his mouth. He told Robert Jordan that he feels it is a sin to kill. Anselmo lets to many emotions out at a time when he should not let his emotions control him. That is probably the last thing Robert Jordan wanted to hear going into war.

I see where your coming from that the people in Hemingway's novel are more relaxed, but I disagree with your point that they are just trying to survive. So far they have done nothing very dangerous at all.

Malcolm,
Its interesting that you brought the Hemmingway Code into play for the main focus of your essay. The fact that Anselmo fails to live up to this code is interesting considering his age which might be saying something about the old. By speaking his thoughts and potential fears he cannot be considered a hero. Good job Big Mac

Hey, Nick. I thought that you comparison of Anselmo with Polonius is a spot-on comparison. Polonius spoke too much, and it lead to his death at the hands of Hamlet. Similarly, Anselmo cannot keep himself quiet in this instance, and this act of letting his guard down is dangerous to both himself and the others. War is not a place for emotional release. It is a time for emotional hardening.

I like how you discussed how war forces soldiers to lose their belief in the sanctity of life. I also like how you pointed out that it as seen as disgusting to kill at home but courageous to kill when at war. This idea of not valuing human life starkly contrasts with the title.

I agree that enemies should learn from each other. You did a good job of connecting the quote to your understanding of Anselmo and Robert's morals, regarding the killing of humans. I also agree to the point that enemies learn more when imprisoned, because it changes the relationship between enemies for future generations.

I agree with the point you argue in your essay. The idea that enemies and allies have a connection is something that I discussed in my essay. I think you make a good point that Anselmo is trying to promote understanding, but he is really being ignorant of the fact that it works both ways. He needs to understand the other side, not just the other side understanding him.
